Debra Ross - Kids Out and About
1 Session in Free Homeschool Summit
Founder, CEO, and Publisher - Kids Out and About
About this speaker
KidsOutAndAbout.com has been online since 2001. It was a time when the Internet itself was still a toddler, an era before social media, before blogs, before YouTube, even before web calendars. Debra Ross, KidsOutAndAbout's founder (and EntertainmentCalendar.com's current publisher), launched the site in Rochester, NY.
At the time, Ross, a technology consultant to the direct commerce industry, had a toddler and one on the way; she was coming to understand how much Rochester had available for kids, teens, and families, but she was finding out about it all after it had already happened. There ought to be a web site to let folks know what's happening in advance, she thought. So she started KidsOutAndAbout.com while on her maternity leave from her other business.
The Expansion
By 2009, the available technology had caught up with Ross's vision, so she reinvented the site on a new content management system to allow for expansion to areas beyond Rochester. There are currently 45 regional sites across the U.S. and Canada, all managed by a dedicated staff of just under 30 team members. Click here to view those sites and select your local region.
Each region also features a free weekly e-newsletter that provides scintillating wit and penetrating insight in addition to lists of things to do and places to go; it is sent each Thursday morning and will become your indispensable guide to trying new things and finding the best and most cost-effective options for local fun. Be sure to sign up using the FREE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER link on the menu at the top.
(You can also "Like" KidsOutAndAbout's local sites on Facebook and find them on other social media, but the dominant connection with our readers is our newsletter.)

After marrying her husband, Rabbi Daniel Lapin, she taught Bible and personal development classes to women at their synagogue in Venice, CA for many years. She and her husband now enjoy the company of the interesting, intelligent, and admirable adults these children have become. While some of them homeschool the next generation, Susan partners with her husband in writing and speaking, promoting traditional and Biblical values through the lens of 3,000 years of ancient Jewish wisdom.

Paula Penn-Nabrit - Telos Training Inc.
2 Sessions in Free Homeschool Summit
Founder - Telos Training Inc.
About this speaker
An alum of Columbus School for Girls, Class of 1972, and Student Council President, Paula Penn-Nabrit completed her undergraduate studies at Wellesley College, Class of 1976, as Student Senate President and a 1975 Wellesley-Washington Intern in Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s office. In August of 1976, she married Charles Madison “CMadison” Nabrit, Dartmouth 1974. By 1981, she’d earned her law degree from The Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University and graduated with Charles and Damon, an adorable set of 13-month-old twins, and the honor of the Order of the Barrister in tow.
Two years later, after the birth of Evan, their equally adorable third son, Paula worked on AT&T’s divestiture project until launching PN&A, Inc. www.nabrit.com/pna, in 1986. Eventually, she convinced CMadison that they could stay married AND run a Black, woman-owned, home-based, family-run, consulting firm focused on demographic research, statistical analysis, and organizational development. Yes, he was an ally. Sadly he died in 2013 but in 2024, PN&A, Inc. will celebrate 38 years of continuous operation, and 16+ years as a 2nd generation family business, due in no small part to the tenacity developed by surviving their collective homeschooling experience. Yes, while building a successful, home-based business, Paula and CMadison homeschooled their sons until Charles and Damon went to Princeton and Evan went off to Amherst.
Paula has presented various papers including, A Comparative Analysis of Value Conflicts in Diverse Professions, University of Oxford; The Significance of Intent in Declaring a Violation of IRC 482: Ethical Analysis of U.S. Transfer Tax, University of Florida; The Impact of Color on International Business and Public Service: The Global Phenomenon of Herrenvolk, University of Siena and most recently, An Ethical, Efficient, Effective, Functional, Pragmatic, Reproducible, and Sustainable Partnership to Address SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) at the 7th World Congress of the International Society of Business Economics and Ethics (ISBEE), Bilbao, Spain, She has also authored several books, most notably, Morning by Morning: How We Home-Schooled Our African-American Sons to the Ivy League, Random House@2003.
Paula’s youngest son works as a graphic design artist in the Philadelphia office of Jacobs Engineering while her eldest sons help run PN&A, Inc. and Telos Training, Inc. www.telosinc.org, the 501(c)(3) she launched in 2011. The largest project to date is The Charles Madison Nabrit Memorial Garden, which opened in 2014 as a biodiverse, organic, 5K sq. ft. space in the rear of The Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith, home to a congregation formed 110+ years ago by descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. Paula’s sons are 5th generation!
The USDA Economic Research Service identifies the zip code as a low-income/low-access urban food desert (Paula says urban food apartheid), so the produce grown is $1.00 lb. at their onsite Farmer’s Market in partnership with Richland Gro-Op, a cooperative of organic farmers in Mansfield, Ohio. A long-standing partnership with OSU’s College of Engineering is the impetus for the solar-powered Farmbot and Hydroponic System and a source for counselors for “STEM-to-STEAM: It’s All in the Garden.” an annual, week-long, free summer day camp for kids aged 5-15. Telos Training, Inc. is also enjoying its 5th year partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital examining biometric data on the impact of increased consumption of fresh organic vegetables in families with children aged 8 and younger.
Yes, Paula likes to stay busy.

Melissa Engle - My Cabin Broken Bow
1 Session in Free Homeschool Summit
About this speaker
Our story…
As a family with school age children, there were multiple reasons that led my husband and I to incorporate homeschooling into our lives.
I am a psychotherapist by trade and have over 30 years of experience in the mental health field. In this role, I have had a front row seat to observe psychological “trends” in our culture- across all age groups. This experience has not only influenced my role as a professional counselor, but it has also influenced my efforts in my own home with my own family and children.
While this awareness was incredibly valuable, it also came with the weight of responsibility which, unfortunately, placed me and my family in a position of being counter-culture. It not only influenced how we spent time together as a family, but it shaped our expectations and needs regarding our children’s education as well- socially, morally, and academically.Â
We came to understand the critical importance of creating the space and time, where we as their parents, could offer learning opportunities and connection. We realized that these experiences help to lay the groundwork for strong and healthy kids mentally, physically and spiritually. As a result, we chose to incorporate homeschooling into our lives.
While we understand that homeschooling is not for everyone, we highly recommend that families create their own educational and learning opportunities for their children and role model healthy lifestyles. This involves creating the space to give undivided attention with no distractions, and to focus on free play, reading books, asking questions, offering affirmations, practicing healthy communication skills, spending time outdoors, and sharing positive reframe for problems and conflict as they arise in real time. We recognize that we, as their parents, are the ones who teach our children how to manage living this life - present and future.
Mi casa es su casa…
My husband and I have always loved the natural beauty and magic of Eastern Oklahoma. The pine trees, clear waters, nature hikes and wildlife made Broken Bow our favorite family escape. In an effort to create opportunities for our family to unplug from the world and plug into nature, we decided to build a cabin in a small resort community in Broken Bow.Â
Mi Vida Loca opened in 2021 and was specifically designed with homeschooling in mind. We also built it with 2 master bedrooms so extended family or friends could join in the fun!Â
Soon after opening, we knew we wanted to share our home-away-from home with other like-minded families to provide them with the same opportunities!Â
Guests of Mi Vida Loca, have shared that they immediately notice all the special touches woven throughout the cabin. From the children’s library nook filled with quality books, feeling charts, a nugget sofa, and tons of family board games to dinnertime conversation cards, gratitude calendars, affirmation mirrors and an indoor scavenger hunt.
Our hope is that you use these opportunities during your stay at Mi Vida Loca, to play, share feelings, talk, and learn more about each other, and to continue these practices with your family when you return to your home.
